2026 IRCC GUIDE

Super Visa Requirements in Canada — Updated for 2026

The 2026 rules include more flexible host-income assessment. Here is what parents, grandparents and their hosts should verify before applying.

Who can apply for a Canadian Super Visa?

A Super Visa is intended for qualifying parents or grandparents of a host who is at least 18, lives in Canada, and is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person registered under the Indian Act. The applicant generally applies from outside Canada and must meet medical, admissibility and other requirements. Check the IRCC eligibility page for visa-exempt applicants as well.

What changed on March 31, 2026?

IRCC introduced alternative ways of assessing the host’s minimum necessary income. One option considers income in either of the two tax years immediately before applying, rather than exclusively the most recent year. Another option may allow the visiting parent’s or grandparent’s documented income to supplement qualifying host/co-signer income, subject to an applicable host-income threshold and calculation rules. These 2026 instructions apply to applications already in process at the effective date.

See the official March 2026 update and the current eligibility rules.

Proof of health insurance

  • Evidence of an eligible insurer and the actual insurance policy.
  • Minimum CAD $100,000 emergency medical coverage.
  • Health care, hospitalization and repatriation benefits.
  • Policy valid at least one year from entry; remain insured during the stay.
  • Paid premium in full or an allowed instalment arrangement with a deposit.

What documents should families prepare?

  • Signed invitation letter from the host and proof of relationship.
  • Evidence of the host’s qualifying status in Canada and residence.
  • Current financial documents supporting the income requirement for the family size.
  • Completed immigration medical examination with an approved panel physician.
  • Qualifying proof of purchased health insurance and any other IRCC-requested records.

Immigration requirements may change; use the official IRCC documents list at the time of application.

How long can Super Visa holders stay?

A qualifying Super Visa can permit stays of up to five years per entry, subject to border-officer decisions and compliance with entry conditions. This does not guarantee admission, authorize employment, or remove the obligation to maintain health insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the Super Visa insurance minimum change in March 2026?

No. The March 2026 change concerns income assessment, not the minimum $100,000 coverage and one-year insurance policy requirements.

Can the host use either of the last two tax years?

Yes, under the 2026 alternative income assessment, eligible hosts can rely on income in either of the two immediately preceding tax years, subject to official conditions.

Can my parent’s pension count toward the host income?

Documented visiting-parent income may help under an alternative 2026 calculation, but the host must meet the prescribed minimum share and all evidence requirements. Consult IRCC’s current instructions.

Is the Super Visa valid for ten years?

A Super Visa may be issued as a multiple-entry visa for up to ten years, subject to passport validity and visa decisions; the authorized length of each stay is a separate issue.

Do I need an insurance policy or just a quote?

IRCC requires qualifying proof of insurance. An unpaid quotation alone is not accepted.
